- Improving graduate education – Colleges and universities need to reconfigure graduate programs to better prepare aspiring professors for teaching. In earlier days, majorities of new Ph.D.s found positions where the research was primary, either in major universities, industry or government. Today, however, many Ph.D.s find employment in top BTech Colleges that mainly provide teaching or work as adjunct instructors and do not expect to do research.
- Creating a teaching faculty – The seeds of such a change exist through the growth of instructors who are not on the tenure track but are hired on a year-to-year basis or a somewhat longer-term to teach basic undergraduate courses.
- Rethinking the undergraduate curriculum – The familiar division into fields of concentration, electives, and general education leaves no space for students. They cannot pursue all of the objectives that professors themselves feel important for a well-rounded college education.
