Ways to tackle the technical education system

Increasing graduation rates and levels of educational achievements can be accomplished if students do not learn something valuable. Over the last several years, BTech Colleges have focused more on enrolling the number of foreign students rather than improving education.

The heavy concentration on graduation rates and attainment levels enables policymakers to ignore the danger signs. It includes the amount of learning students are getting in colleges are declining over the past decades. There are some reasons for concern includes:

Most of the graduates that employers are hiring have a lack of basic skills like writing, problem-solving and critical thinking. College leaders and their faculties consistently rank them among the most important goals of undergraduate education.

Some immediate improvements

Top Engineering Colleges provide a wide variety of engineering courses, majors and extracurricular opportunities. There are chances that the courses do not, in fact, contribute much to the ultimate goals that colleges claim to value. Also, instructors are not taking sufficient care to explain the larger aims of their courses.

A study shows that many instructors do not teach their courses in the best ways. This will help them to achieve the ends that faculties themselves consider important. Now that most faculties have defined the learning objectives of their college and its various departments and programs. It should be possible to review recent examinations to determine whether individual professors, programs and departments are actually designing their courses to achieve those goals.

In addition, the average time students of BTech Colleges devote to studying varies widely among different colleges. The lack of evidence about the study habits of their undergraduates could inform themselves through confidential surveys. With this, faculties could review and consider steps to encourage greater student effort and improve learning.

More substantial reforms

There are some fundamental changes that will take longer to achieve but it could eventually result in greater gains in the quality of undergraduate education. They include:

  1. Improving graduate education – Colleges and universities need to reconfigure graduate programs to better prepare aspiring professors for teaching. In earlier days, majorities of new Ph.D.s found positions where the research was primary, either in major universities, industry or government. Today, however, many Ph.D.s find employment in top BTech Colleges that mainly provide teaching or work as adjunct instructors and do not expect to do research.
  2. Creating a teaching faculty – The seeds of such a change exist through the growth of instructors who are not on the tenure track but are hired on a year-to-year basis or a somewhat longer-term to teach basic undergraduate courses.
  3. Rethinking the undergraduate curriculum – The familiar division into fields of concentration, electives, and general education leaves no space for students. They cannot pursue all of the objectives that professors themselves feel important for a well-rounded college education.
