Tips to freelancing as a Web Designer

The freelancers’ guide to finding web design jobs

Many web designers opt to work in the freelance world instead of landing a full-time job. They enjoy flexibility when it comes to hours, prefer to work from home and appreciate the diversity of different clients. Companies also prefer freelance work over hiring in-house employees when they have major short-term projects instead of consistent work. They can also save money in the long run.

An individual can easily launch his/her freelance career by following below steps:

Make sure to update your resume and portfolio

A portfolio is the first thing that every potential client seeks. If you are a visual graphic designer or an interactive developer, they want to see what you have designed in the past. Also, they will check what industries you have worked for. As long as they are landing clients, they need to keep their portfolio and resume updated with your latest work experience.

Whenever graduates of MBA Colleges start a new project, they must ask about options for highlighting their work. Some companies have strict confidentiality agreements. There are cases when you might not be able to include your work in a portfolio. In such a case, you can try to balance your clients between brands to include in your portfolio.

Always lookout for new clients

The challenge with freelance work is that individuals are not aware that when clients will have to drop their major projects that will fall through. As a result, they should constantly be on the lookout for new design opportunities and people to work with.

UX designers can get involved in developer communities locally or online to find opportunities to network. By immersing yourself with people within your industry, you can get your name out there and learn the right jargon that someone in the business community would not understand.

Set regular work hours

Many freelance web designers enter the field so they can choose their own hours. On the other hand, some of them struggle with freedom. If they do not have an office to go to every day, then they get distracted and end up falling behind. To prevent this, freelancers should choose hours whenever they work best and stick to them to develop a routine.

This also helps freelancers learn to turn off for the day. Working from home means they are always technically “at the office” Some freelancers work 16-hour days because they never stop taking calls and fixing bugs.

The first year as a freelance web designer is filled with excitement and nerves for most of the web designing graduates. However, once you get into a routine, establish a client base, and notice your portfolio grows, you can start to enjoy the freedom that comes with being self-employed. Just do not enjoy too much freedom, or you could pick up some bad habits.
