B.Tech Lateral Entry 2026: Direct 2nd Year Admission Process, Eligibility & Syllabus Guide

B Tech lateral entry admission process 2026 is an important way of admission for Diploma holders in Polytechnic Diploma courses and eligible B.Sc. graduates to take engineering admission in the second year of the course and as per this admission process, eligible students are admitted from the third semester and, in three years, complete their B.Tech degree.

For students of Rajasthan state, this route of admission is known as LEEP – Lateral Entry in Engineering Programme. Though many students refer to it as REAP lateral entry, there is a separate admission portal for LEEP in second-year engineering admissions in Rajasthan.

What is B.Tech Lateral Entry?

B.Tech lateral entry enables students having technical education to pursue further education in engineering. This program is for those students who have completed a three-year Polytechnic Diploma in Engineering or an eligible B.Sc. degree with Mathematics.

As a Diploma student, one has usually studied various technical courses like engineering drawing, workshop practice, programming, electronics, mechanics, electricity, manufacturing, or computer applications. Since these courses are common in the initial stages of engineering, lateral entry admission recognizes this fact.

After getting admission in B.Tech, students join the normal B.Tech batch in the third semester. Students learn various branch-specific courses, labs, mini-projects, industry training, internships, and final year project just like other second year students and This lateral entry process is useful for those students who wish to get higher education in engineering but are not willing to repeat the first year of their education, and it requires hard work as one needs to adjust to the academic, examination, technical assignment, coding, projects, and placements requirements of the university.

Educational Qualifications: Polytechnic Diploma & B.Sc.

Note that meeting the above minimum marks requirement does not assure admission. Other factors such as merit rank, category, domicile, branch choice, college choice, counselling process, etc., will also be taken into consideration.

Minimum Percentage Requirements

With respect to lateral entry B.Tech in Rajasthan colleges, the generally accepted eligibility is a 45% aggregate mark in the qualifying Diploma/B.Sc. exam, and a relaxation of 40% aggregate mark is applicable to some reserved categories in Rajasthan as per the current admission norms.

Note that meeting the above minimum marks requirement does not assure admission. Other factors such as merit rank, category, domicile, branch choice, college choice, counselling process, etc., will also be taken into consideration.

Syllabus & Bridge Courses: What to Expect in 3rd Semester

LEP students usually begin second-year B.Tech courses and the specific syllabus would depend on the branch and university curriculum.

The branches of CSE/AI have programming, data structures, object-oriented programming, mathematics, digital electronics, database, and lab classes. The MECH branch students can take manufacturing processes, thermodynamics, materials science, and engineering design courses. Students of EE/ECE branches might learn circuit analysis, electronic devices, signals, machines, power systems, and communications fundamentals.

RTU has released guidelines for bridge courses in LEEP, which include: Fundamentals of Engineering Mathematics, Programming for Problem Solving, and Engineering Graphics/ Drawing. Students of B.Sc. also need to clear Engineering Drawing and Engineering Mechanics besides their second-year classes.

Career Opportunities and Campus Placements

The lateral entry to B. Tech is going to be helpful to secure good future careers since both theoretical and practical knowledge in the form of diploma and university degree will help the students to achieve good career success, and career opportunities could involve software development, artificial intelligence, data analytics, electrical designing, embedded systems, manufacturing, quality assurance, automation, testing, technical support, and project engineering and campus placements are very important, but skill is more important, and hence, the candidates need to work on projects, do internships, participate in hackathons, develop engineering/coding skills, create a GitHub account/ portfolio and prepare for aptitude tests and interviews.
