The session of 2017-18 witnessed scientific breakthroughs for our country. In addition, Indian scientists provide an insight to the professionals of Top Engineering Colleges based on what future holds in terms of science and technology. However, it varies from conducting India’s first womb transplant at a hospital in Pune to the discovery of supercluster of galaxies named Saraswati in July. Under mentioned are some scientific breakthroughs during the year which has massively changed the face of Indian science.
Saraswati – A galaxy supercluster discovered by Indian researchers (2017)
The Indian astronomers discovered a galaxy supercluster, named ‘Saraswati’, in July 2017. The analysis of this four-billion-year-old supercluster had helped the astronomers in understanding the formation and composition of our universe. It is likely to contain billions of planets, stars, gases, dark matter, and other bodies.
Discover the fossil of a rare dinosaur, Ichthyosaur in Gujarat (2017)
The first-ever fossil of an Ichthyosaur was found in Gujarat. The Ichthyosaurs were aquatic reptiles. They are similar to the whales and dolphins of their time but are like more predators. They had narrow jaws, huge eyes, and cone-shaped teeth. These fossils help paleontologists to understand how aquatic life functioned back in the Jurassic age.
World’s smallest spacecraft was launched by ISRO (2017)
The world’s first-ever smallest spacecraft, Sprites was successful launches on 23rd June 2017. It uses by ISRO PSLV rocket and later placed in low Earth orbit. The size and weight of the space probe was 3.5cm x 3.5cm and 4 grams respectively. It mainly runs on sunlight. The main aim of launching a tiny spacecraft into space is to collect data which could throw light on the possibility of life beyond Earth.
India’s first uterus transplant conducted in Pune (2017)
The doctors at Pune’s biggest Institute successfully conducted the first uterus transplant in May last year. However, the patient was a 21-year-old woman. She belongs to Solapur and born without a uterus. Even after this, she was unable to conceive a child. The procedure took nine hours to complete and uses a laparoscopic technique.
Indian scientists co-authored Physics Nobel-winning paper (2017)
A total of 37 Indian scientists from the top nine institutes co-authored the research paper on the first gravitational waves detection. In addition, they were awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics. However, the team of these scientists was led by Sanjeev Dhurandhar for Astronomy and Astrophysics from Inter-University Centre, Pune (IUCAA). In India, he is a pioneer in gravitational waves astronomy who was working on this subject for 30 years.
